MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — No residents were displaced after a Friday night apartment fire in Merrill.
It happened in a complex at 111 Pier Street in the City of Merrill. Crews found smoke coming from the basement. All occupants of the upper apartment were able to get out safely.
Crews contained the damage to a small portion of the basement and then used thermal imaging to confirm that the flames had not spread through the HVAC infrastructure.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. No residents or firefighters were hurt in the blaze.
During the response, gas and electric services were shut off to portions of the building. A WPS employee recommended keeping the gas off until the furnace could be inspected and the vent pipes were replaced.
First responders noted that the lower unit of the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
