TOWN OF MERRILL (WSAU) — Two people died in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 17 in Lincoln County on Wednesday.
It started when a northbound pickup crossed the center line and struck a southbound SUV. A southbound pickup trailing the SUV could not avoid the crash and hit the first pickup.
The occupants of the SUV, a 79-year-old woman and her 82-year-old passenger, both died at the scene. The driver of the northbound pickup suffered critical injuries but is expected to recover.
The driver of the second pickup suffered minor injuries at the scene. They did not require hospitalization.
Names of those involved are expected to be released later today. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Highway 17 was closed for about five and a half hours on Wednesday while crews investigated and cleared the scene. First responders from Merrill and the State Patrol responded to the scene.
