WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Two midwestern Governors held a rally for the Kamala Harris – Tim Walz ticket Monday morning.
Wisconsin’s Tony Evers and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer stopped at Whitewater Music Hall in Wausau to rally supporters and encourage voter turnout for the November 5th election. Evers said it’s no secret this race will be close, but he sees a winning path for Democrats if they can execute a strong grassroots effort. “Kamala Harris and Tim Walz bring some values to the plate that the Republicans don’t. It’s really simple- taking care of the middle class, cutting taxes for the middle class, and making sure our infrastructure is strong.
“[We need to] connect with people between now and November 5th. This is a critical part of the state and that’s why we are here,” added Evers.
As it currently stands, the latest poll from CBS News shows the race for the White House tied in Wisconsin, while Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia sit in Trump’s column and Nevada and Michigan are in Harris’ column. Meanwhile, the latest Fabrizo Lee and GBAO poll for the Wall Street Journal also shows Trump and Harris tied in Wisconsin.
Both Governors noted how close the previous elections had been in their states, including 2020 when Joe Biden won Wisconsin by about 20,000 votes. That comes down to just a couple of votes per precinct, meaning every vote in the Badger state is crucial.
Whitmer says Michiganders and Wisconsinites are a microcosm of America. “We work hard, we’re good people who expect our government to work as hard if not harder than we do and be as good if not better than we are. We know that our voices are going to count tremendously in this election.”
She also made an appeal to undecided Republicans, saying the Dems value outside views. “There is a seat at the table for everyone in a [potential] Harris-Walz administration. You don’t need to be bought in 100% on everything for you to be respected and valued.”
Fellow Democrats Sara Godlewski, Kyle Kilbourn, and Yee Leng Xiong also spoke at Monday’s event. Xiong is running against Pat Snyder for the newly-drawn 85th Assembly District seat which covers most of Wausau and Weston. Kilbourn is challenging Tom Tiffany for the state’s 7th Congressional District seat in Washington. Godlewski serves as Wisconsin’s Secretary of State.
A similar rally followed Monday’s event in Stevens Point. On Tuesday, the bus tour will also hit Hudson, Portage, Madison, and Mequon. They’ll also join VP nominee Walz at a rally in Green Bay on Monday evening.
