STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) – The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point welcomed their incoming freshman class to campus on Thursday morning as students were given their first opportunity to move into their dorms and get a feel for what student life will be like this upcoming academic school year.
While moving into her dorm on campus, business student Allison Lundebrek spoke about what it’s like to have move-in day finally arrive, saying, “It’s a little nerve-racking because I’m in a new state, but I’m excited for the opportunities.”
Lundebrek, who is originally from central Minnesota and will be living away from home for the first time, chose UWSP due to having family members who live in the area but said meeting new people will be part of the experience, saying, “I do know one (student); she’s a year older than me, but I’m excited to meet new people as well.”
The choice to attend UWSP was easy for the more than 1700 incoming students as the university was recognized in Wallet Hub’s “Best College Towns and Cities in America” poll, ranking fifth out of 415 cities across the nation, and U.S. News and World Report ranked UW-Stevens Point 14th among regional public universities in the 12 states of its Midwest region back in 2021.
UWSP Marketing Specialist for Housing and Residence Life Katie Hansen stated that move-in takes months of preparation, saying, “We prepare for move-in all summer, and there are a number of things we do to help students have a good day. We talk about it during the orientations throughout the summer while having information that goes out through email and on our social media as well as providing ample blue carts…we bought even more this year to make it even easier…just try to make it as seamless a process as possible.”
Official census data from the tenth day of school for the 2023–24 academic year showed a 10% rise in first-year student enrollment at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. In total, UW-Stevens Point welcomed 1,701 first-year students this past fall while boasting one of the highest application completion rates in the UW System, at 92 percent. Graduate student enrollment also increased by 5.5 percent overall, although the number of transfer students saw just a moderate increase.
