WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Marathon County man has been sentenced to jail time and probation as part of a plea deal for OWI, eluding an officer, and operating a firearm while intoxicated.
John Strasser pled guilty to a first offense OWI and no contest for the other charges. Judge Suzanne O’Neill then found him guilty of both and sentenced him to nine months in the Marathon County jail with Huber privileges.
An additional three-month jail sentence has been stayed, meaning he will only serve it if he violates the terms of his probation. Those include absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol and completing all recommended treatment and counseling.
The 44-year-old must also pay court costs. His probation will last through 2027.
Charges against Strasser stemmed from an Independence Day incident in 2022. Officers say he set his home on fire, then took off down Highway 97. Officers lost track of him near Ahrens Road but caught up with him again a few minutes later on Highway 153.
Deputies worked with OnStar to slow the vehicle down and eventually bring it to a stop. That’s when Strasser is accused of getting out of the vehicle and pointing a gun at officers.
Strasser had previously pled not guilty to the charges and was scheduled for trial in September.
