WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) โ A 23-year-old math teacher from John Muir Middle School has pled not guilty to misdemeanor charges after officers found cocaine in his vehicle on school grounds.
Nevan Larson was in court Friday afternoon where he waived his right to a reading of the charges and entered the plea for one count of possession of cocaine. The charge carries a modifier for possessing a controlled substance near certain places, in this case a school.
Officers believe Larson had approximately one gram of cocaine in his vehicle while it was parked on school grounds Thursday. According to police the School Resource Officer at John Muir Middle School was tipped off to the drugs and did a preliminary search around the vehicle. They then called in a K9 officer who directed them to a substance that later tested positive for cocaine.
Larson was arrested Thursday afternoon and spent the night in the Marathon County Jail before Fridayโs court appearance. He was given a $2,500 signature bond with several conditions including no contact with the Wausau School District and absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 9th.
Both the Wausau School District and Police Department released statements about the incident on Friday morning. Both noted that no evidence suggests students were involved in the incident. Larson has been placed on a leave of absence pending the outcome of the investigation.
