WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) โ A Marathon County Supervisor and D.C. Everest School Board member is seeing a higher office.
Yee Leng Xiong is scheduled to announce his candidacy for the newly drawn 85th Assembly District seat outside the Marathon County Courthouse this afternoon. In a press release, Xiong described himself as โa passionate leader [who] will represent the voices of the residents of the 85th District.โ
His priorities will include public safety, public education, and economic development. He is also looking to expand access to health care including mental health services.
Xiongโs announcement came as part of an hour-long rally outside the Courthouse featuring comments from fellow Supervisor John Robinson, 10th District Supervisor-elect Randy Radtke, and former Wausau School Board member and City Council representative Mary Thao.
Xiong is the first Democrat to declare candidacy for the district. Representative Pat Snyder has already declared his candidacy for the seat despite being drawn out of the new boundaries. He has previously said he will move into the new district if he wins re-election.
Should any other major-party candidates declare for the seat, an August primary would be required.
