CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – April 1st is here, which means that millions of people across the globe are getting ready to prank their friends.
However, it is important to remember not to go too far when pranking someone. One common way that people go too far with is a prank call. According to Sergeant James Luckey at the Chippewa Falls Police Department, prank calling can be considered a crime if it leads to harassment or stalking. In fact, there was an issue regarding prank calling and the police department less than a month ago.
“Most recently, as memory serves, there was actually prank calls to police dispatch, and that was something that was repeated continuous, and it definitely reached that harassing in nature,” said Luckey. “Our biggest concern there is that it starts to interfere with the capability of the police dispatch to generate calls and adequately serve the community.”
Luckey said that one of the charges that can be issued in prank call cases is a misuse of a telephone, for which a fine is issued.
