WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) – Wisconsin Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Eric Hovde has committed to not accepting any of his $174,000 government salary if elected to the seat in November.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Hovde says he “can’t be bought” and that Washington, D.C., has become “corrupt,” and “career politicians sell themselves to special interests” instead of working on behalf of their constituents.
“I’ve worked hard and been fortunate. I don’t need their special interest money, and I won’t take it,” Hovde said in an ad released Friday. “If you decide to elect me as your next senator, I’ll donate my entire salary to a Wisconsin charity every year.”
Hovde, who owns a bank in California and a real estate company in Madison, has promised to follow in the footsteps of former Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl and finance a large portion of his campaign himself and invest up to $20 million of his own money into his campaign to topple incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Baldwin, who Open Secrets currently ranks as the 55th richest representative out of 100 in the U.S. Senate, had an estimated $8 million in campaign funds on hand at the beginning of 2024.
