MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — Among the many bills not taken up by the Wisconsin Legislature this session – one creating a task force on missing and murdered African American women and girls.
In a press release, bill author Representative Sheila Stubbs said she’s “appalled” that it failed to get a state Senate vote.
The Madison Democrat testified at a recent Senate committee hearing where it received unanimous support.
“I want to bring home every victim that’s across our state, give closure to every family,” said Stubbs. “This is a really difficult time with so many families in the state.”
Stubbs also noted that in 2020, Wisconsin was the state with the highest homicide rate of African American women and girls in the nation; 20.2 per 100,000.
Additionally the Black female homicide rate in Wisconsin doubled from 2019 to 2020.
The bill was modeled on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Task Force in the state Department of Justice.
Stubbs promised to reintroduce the measure in the next session.
