WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Beginning this fall, Red Granite Charter School will be located in Hewitt-Texas Elementary School for the first two years.
Red Granite was planned to begin this autumn at Monk Botanical Gardens, but there isn’t enough time to complete the necessary planning, permitting, and fundraising, according to a joint news release from the District and Red Granite Charter School.
“In order to open up on Monk Gardens’ property, significant site planning, permitting, and fundraising were all necessary. There’s just not enough time for that to be completed in a thoughtful manner before the school opens up this fall,” the release said.
The charter school will relocate to Hewitt-Texas Elementary School for the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 academic years due to the need for more time for preparation and other reasons.
During their Monday night meeting, the Wausau School Board granted the request for the relocation and the enrollment period for the 2024-25 school year closes on March 1.
“There is a growing demand for educational options in our area, and Red Granite would be one of very few Waldorf-inspired public schools in the state of Wisconsin. This school will provide a unique and valuable educational experience for students and their families who are interested in this model of learning.” said Wausau School District Superintendent Dr. Keith Hilts in the release.
Until a permanent home for Red Granite Charter School is found, both Red Granite and Hewitt-Texas Elementary students and staff will be housed on the same property.
