MADISON, WI (WSAU) – Gov. Tony Evers announced on Monday morning that Wisconsin will have new maps for this year’s election season.
According to a press release, Evers stated that the proposed maps are “fair, responsive, and reflect the will of people” and “This will be the first time in over 50 years that Wisconsin will have fair legislative maps enacted through the legislative process rather than through the courts. These maps will take effect immediately after publication. They will be in place for the fall elections, providing certainty for candidates and campaigns that are gearing up to circulate nomination papers this spring. I will also be asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to clarify that these maps will be in place for any special elections that occur between now and the fall.”
Evers’ proposed maps were approved by the state Assembly and Senate last Tuesday afternoon on party-line votes as all but two Democrats in the legislature voted against the maps.
In a response to Evers’ signing the maps, Speaker Robin Vos praised the decision saying, “This fall Republicans will prove that we can win on any maps because we have the better policy ideas for the State of Wisconsin. We are happy that the Governor’s signature brings to end decades of liberal special interest litigation over maps in Wisconsin.”
The Associated Press reports there will be six such pairings in the Senate and fifteen incumbents in the Assembly who will have to face off against one another under the new maps. There will only be one Assembly match that puts a Democratic incumbent against a Republican and the lone Democratic pairing in the Senate includes an incumbent who has already declared that she will not seek reelection this fall.
