STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – Finding space for the new Portage County jail has taken months, but a meeting on Monday morning is making progress, while also causing controversy. A new site in Plover near Del Monte Foods is being considered.
Many voiced their concerns about the proposed tax hike that would go to the proposed jail. Donald Jankowski, Chair of the Space and Properties Committee said, “We had a realtor to look at the locations and he came back with pricing and facts that people weren’t willing to sell or we were limited down to this as a final site.”
It would be a two-pod jail with many updated facilities and the Sheriff’s office. Portage County Sheriff Mike Lukas said, “The new style jail, number one you have line of sight camera angles, it actually reduces your staff needs. We don’t have an exercise area, we don’t have meeting rooms, we have one room for everything.”
The next space and properties meeting is March 5th at 3:30 p.m.
