EAGLE RIVER, WI (WSAU-WXPR) — Another winter event has been altered due to a lack of winter-like conditions.
WXPR Radio in Rhinelander reports that USA Hockey has canceled this year’s Pond Hockey Championships on Dollar Lake because warmer temperatures and thin ice will prevent them from guaranteeing safety for players and officials.
Those who have paid the entry fee for the tournament can choose to either have their fee rolled over to the 2025 event or request a refund by February 29. Teams that choose a refund will not be guaranteed entry into next year’s event if they sign up at a later date.
The tournament was scheduled to start on February 9th and run through the 11th. However the forecast for the next two weeks calls for daytime highs in the mid-30s and less snow, which means less reliable ice.
The event draws over 250 teams and nearly 2,000 players to the Northwoods annually.
