WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Law enforcement and medical providers are encouraging everyone to go through their medicine cabinet this Saturday on Drug Takeback Day.
“It is a day for people to bring in their unused or unwanted medications to drug collection sites across America,” said Andrea Modlin, a clinical pharmacist with Aspirus Wausau. “Too often, unused or expired medications find their way into the wrong hands, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose or abuse.”
Proper disposal of medications also keeps them out of landfills or waterways where they could damage the environment. It’s also a matter of public safety, as prescription painkillers are often coveted by illicit drug dealers.
“People who make want to take them for themselves or sell them, it really mitigates any diversion,” added Modlin.
Keeping unused or expired medication out of your home also prevents it from accidentally being taken by pets or children.
Items are accepted at many drug takeback locations year-round, but each year there are two takeback days held to raise awareness and provide another opportunity for those who may not be able to get to a takeback box during regular business hours.
The US Department of Justice has published a searchable list of drug takeback locations that are open year-round on its website. Additionally, some police stations will have special drop box hours this Saturday to raise awareness about proper the disposal of medications.
