STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Police in Stevens Point say no one was hurt and no active shooter situation was present at SPASH this afternoon, despite a phone call that said otherwise.
Portage County Dispatch said the call came in at about 12:04 PM, prompting a heavy police presence at the High School. When officers arrived, they found a normal school day in progress with no active shooter or other threats present.
Officers say the caller had a thick accent. No other information about the call was provided, including if it originated locally.
It’s unclear if the case is linked to a series of other school threats made earlier today, including Merril, Green Bay, and Oshkosh areas. Several cases were also reported in Southwest Wisconsin and in the Manitowoc and Madison areas.
The FBI is aware of the incidents and is investigating, according to a statement released to WAOW TV, which reads in full: “The FBI is aware of the numerous swatting incidents wherein a report of an active shooter at a school is made. The FBI takes swatting very seriously because it puts innocent people at risk. While we have no information to indicate a specific and credible threat, we will continue to work with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to gather, share, and act upon threat information as it comes to our attention. We urge the public to remain vigilant, and report any and all suspicious activity and/or individuals to law enforcement immediately.”
