VILLAGE OF WESTON, WI (WSAU) — The D.C. Everest Foundation held an open house Wednesday to reveal plans for the proposed $30 million Greenheck Turner Community Center, which will be an addition to the current Greenheck Fieldhouse near the Senior High campus.
“It will add 135,000 square feet onto the facility,” said Lindsey Lewitzke with the Foundation.
The facility will include a regulation-size field turf soccer pitch that can be divided for multiple uses at once. Batting cages, golf simulators, a track, and a community event space are also part of the plans.
There will also be bleacher seating and other spectator space which she says will make year-round tournaments and other events possible. “We’re estimating overa million dollars in economic impact, and that’s on the low end and it should get 40,000-50,000 visits per year,” said Lewitzke.
She adds that inspiration for the facility was taken from the recently opened Hodag Dome in Rhinelander but they also looked at offerings in Milwaukee and the Twin Cities as well. She expects the facility to draw regular use from residents within a 50-mile radius of Wausau and Weston.
Of the $29 million needed to complete the project, over $23.5 has already been committed. Lewitzke says once the last dollar has been secured, they will begin construction, meaning a grand opening could happen by the fall of 2024.
