WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The Wood County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve received word of a new scam involving an application for credit from a major bank.
This one involved a letter that appeared to be from Chase Bank, but the alert resident was able to verify that the return address and phone number did not belong to Chase.
“This letter appears to all be legitimate, but luckily the person who received the letter were on their toes. The address and phone number do not belong to Chase and chase verified that they will not ask for personal information over the phone,” officers said through a Facebook post.
The letter told the resident that further information was needed to complete a recent credit application, encouraging them to call back to provide personal data over the phone.
Instead, the person turned the letter over to the Sheriff’s office so they could inform others about the new approach. Officers add if something appears to be a scam or illegitimate, chances are it probably is.
