MOSINEE, WI (WSAU-WAOW) A child could be seen capturing what was once a dry playground at River Park in Mosinee with their father’s cell phone camera, just to see what had happened Thursday.
High water levels flooded the walkways and gravel roads, which have since been blocked off, and it may take some time before the water fully recedes. A flood warning was issued by the National Weather Service for low-lying areas south of Stevens Point. Authorities say the area off Park Drive in the town of Plover could be at risk, because of its lower shore levels.
“Make sure you’re checking the basements, making sure that any extension cords, any power strips are up,” said Stevens Point Fire Chief J.B. Moody.
If you’re in a situation where the water comes up onto the road, the phrase to remember is “turn around, don’t drown.”
“We don’t want somebody being swept away, we don’t want people driving through unknown depths of water, we want people to go around if at all possible,” Moody said.
The Portage County Sheriff’s Office is strongly discouraging any type of boating-related activities in the meantime to keep the waves down and prevent injury.
