LAND O LAKES, WI (WSAU-WXPR) – The Corpse Flower is a rare flower from Indonesia that blooms for exactly one week of the year.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the plant as endangered, and people in cities will wait in line for hours to see a flower bloom.
The Northwoods has seven of these flowers at Sunrise Lodge in Land O’ Lakes.
Last week one of them bloomed for the public to witness at the town’s Chamber of Commerce. Stefan Anderson is the chamber’s executive director. “Last Thursday morning, I thought a mouse had died. I thought, I may not be working here today.”
The huge flower is bright purple and 8 or 9 feet tall. The flower gets its name from its stench – it smells like rotting flesh.
But the smell, like the bloom, will disappear in a week.
