Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt Lafleur wrapped up his week in Las Vegas on the losing side in the 2022 Pro Bowl as the AFC beat the NFC 41-35 on Sunday but LaFleur is still coming home a winner.
After re-shuffling his offensive coaching staff with promotions after the departures of Nathaniel Hackett and Justin Outten to Denver and Luke Getsy to Chicago, LaFleur reportedly met with former Las Vegas Raiders interim Head Coach Rich Bisaccia and according to Ian Rapaport with the NFL Network, he convinced him to come to Green Bay as his new Special Teams Coordinator.
The hire, confirmed by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky’s sources, should give the problematic Special Teams a big lift.
After just one season, Maurice Drayton was let go after the unit experienced problems all season, magnified by the meltdown in the NFC Divisional Playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers where the Packers not only had a field goal blocked just before the half that would have given them a 10-0 lead, they gave up a 45 yard kickoff return to open the third quarter which led to the 49ers first three points, then the infamous blocked punt which resulted in their only touchdown and on the final, game winning field goal, Green Bay had only 10 men on the field.
Bisaccia took over the Raiders after Jon Gruden was dismissed following the e-mails that were released as part of the investigation into the workplace culture of the Washington Commanders under owner Daniel Snyder. He led Las Vegas into the playoffs as a wild card team but were eliminated on the opening weekend by the eventual AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals.
He’s made his mark with Special Teams however, beginning with a 9 year stint as coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bisaccia then spent two seasons with the San Diego Chargers before taking the coordinator job with the Dallas Cowboys from 2013 to 2017. He became the Raiders’ Special Teams coach in 2018.
Bisaccia becomes the third Special Teams Coordinator for LaFleur entering his 4th season in Green Bay.
