STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — Residents in Stevens Point are being asked to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks and fire hydrants following two rounds of snow this week.
City ordinance states that property owners or building residents are responsible to clear snow from their sidewalks 24 hours after the end of a snow event if they have a boulevard by their street, or 48 hours after the end of a snowfall event if there is no boulevard.
Residents are asked to pay particular attention to sidewalks near school zones and to clear wheelchair curb cuts near intersections. The Fire Department is also asking residents to make sure all neighborhood fire hydrants are clear in the event of an emergency. The time it takes crews to clear the hydrants themselves can be the difference between saving property and a total loss in the event of a fire.
Those who don’t clear their sidewalks on time may have the cost of clearing added to their tax bills.
