SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) – Wayne Steffenhagen, one of the best-known high school football coaches in the state, has died.
He coached at D.C. Everest for 33 years, compiling 273 wins and five state championships. When he retired in 2011, he’d won 16 Wisconsin Valley Conference titles. He’s a member of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the National High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Everest’s football field is named in his honor.
Even after retirement, Steffenhagen was a regular presence at team practices. Many current members of the Evergreens coaching staff played under him as students.
A cause of death hasn’t been announced.
Funeral arrangements are pending. He was 79.
