WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Wausau man accused of purchasing fraudulent credit card numbers and then attempting to use them at a local gas station has been handed a stayed sentence.
Jason Neidert will avoid five years in prison if he maintains a clean record and meets other conditions. That includes completion of a court-approved assessment and treatment program, absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol, and completion of a drug treatment program.
Neidert will also be required to maintain full-time employment or schooling. If he can’t meet those conditions, he will have to perform at least nine hours of community service per week.
The 45-year-old entered a no contest plea to five counts of improperly possessing a credit card scanning device. Ten other counts were dismissed but read in.
A judge also ordered him to turn over all his credit card scanning devices. Which can be used to re-program any magnetic strip card, such as a hotel key card or used gift card, to act as a credit card.
Officials were tipped off to Neidert’s activity by an employee of a Wausau-area Kwik Trip store who observed him attempting to use as many as 60 different cards at the self-service kiosk outside the store’s car wash. He also attempted to use some cards to make a small purchase in the store, telling the clerk his card had been “acting up.”
