WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Despite some concerns about a closure in early February, the Wausau Center Mall will not be closed on Monday.
In early 2021 it was rumored that the Wausau Center Mall could be completely closing for good on February 1st. But according to Wausau Opportunity Zone (WOZ) President Dave Eckmann the mall does not have an official closing date at this time.
Speaking with the Wausau Daily Herald Eckmann says, “The mall is not closing this month. It’s not closing on Sunday,” Eckmann said. “The mall will remain open until an official announcement is made”.
Some store leases in the mall expire on February 1st including Tradehome Shoes and Uff Da! Tradehome Shoes is permanently closing its store while Uff Da! has plans to move to the Fox River Mall in Appleton in the fall of 2021.
At the end of 2019, Wausau Opportunity Zone Fund, a locally financed nonprofit group, bought the mall from its Miami-based owner, Rialto Capital. WOZ’s plans call for redeveloping the eight blocks that encompass the mall. The site could soon be home to a public market and new retail shops and 300 or more apartments. No date is currently set for the demolition of the mall building.
