BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – For those looking to get outside, and giving fishing a try, there may be some luck.
Twice a year, the Department of Natural Resources offers a free fishing weekend.
On the waters of Green Bay just off Joliet Park, Mark Vaughan is trying his luck at whitefish.
“Absolutely nothing. Really. Not good news by all means. There were a few other people out here this morning. They’ve left.”
Vaughan is one of about 1.25 million licensed anglers fishing throughout the state each year. The DNR is offering a chance try the sport during the winter free fishing weekend on Saturday, Jan. 16, and Sunday, Jan. 17.
“It’s nice that they have two weekends now a year, summer and winter, so people get the experience both seasons for free. To see if it’s something they’re interested in doing without spending a lot of money,” said Vaughan.
According to the DNR fishing in Wisconsin is big business, generating an economic impact of $2.3 billion. That’s something Jeff Tilkens sees at his bait store, Smokey’s on the Bay in Green Bay.
“What’s nice about it, because once the people get hooked on fishing, you get a little kid that caught his first fish, and he’s going daddy, I want to go again. Then they’re going to come back, and they’re going to buy a rod and reel, and buy lures. So it’s good for the whole industry.”
Customer Todd Klarkowski agrees.
“I think it’s a great idea. To get the kids out and stuff like that. Because it gives them a new avenue to look at the outdoors.”
Back on the ice, Mark Vaughan says he’s been fishing since he was a kid.
“It’s just a nice way to get away and enjoy the summertime, enjoy the sun, a little peace and quiet. And in the wintertime, just get off the couch, and get outside.”
The free fishing event dates back to 1986, with the summer, free fishing day.
It was expanded to the summer free fishing weekend in 1994.
The winter free fishing weekend started in 2012.
