WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Officials with Aspirus Health and the Woodson YMCA along with the City of Wausau say the re-route of Highway 51/52 through downtown has been completed, setting up the final phase of a $40 million health and wellness campus.
In a statement on Tuesday, Aspirus officials announced they will begin the construction of their downtown clinic in the spring of 2021. “We’re really proud to get this project back up and running to help enrich the lives of our community members through health and wellness,” said Vice President of Clinic Operations and Chief Nursing Officer Matt Brewer. “Aspirus looks forward to [being] able to lead health care enhancements such as this in the communities we serve.”
Work completed over the summer included the vacation of a portion of McIndoe Street and N 2nd Street to allow for additional parking for the complex. The city also re-located some underground utilities.
The Aspirus portion of the project was originally scheduled to be underway by now. That was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the health system diverted resources to fighting the virus.
The YMCA has already completed its portion of the project which includes an expanded workout facility, additional space for childcare, and a new fieldhouse. Plans have also included a skywalk that connects the YMCA to the clinic.
