USDA decided to extend their free Summer meal program and it could go until the end of the year. In the Summer months, the program helps to make sure that every kid has something to eat even though they aren’t in school. Yes, schools are back in session, but some families are still trying to recover financially from the coronavirus.
Extending the free lunch program will also employ Summer program sponsors to guarantee that all kids are getting fed whether they’re learning in the classroom or online. USDA says they’re constantly figuring out fund numbers to see how long they can provide free lunches because Congress didn’t approve enough funding for the entire school year. There’s no word on how much the extension will cost, but at least every child will have a meal.
