WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Two of Wausau’s three outdoor swimming pools will open this weekend.
City and County Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Director Jamie Polley says Schulenburg and Memorial Pools will open this weekend. Kaiser Pool will open about one week later, on June 15th. She says now’s the time to get out and enjoy them. “We are up and running,” said Polley. “[The staff] is busy, as we expect people will be out in the parks. So come enjoy what we have, visit the pools, and if you see something that needs to be addressed, let our office know.”
Crews are currently working to fix a mechanical issue with Kaiser’s waterslide, but that hasn’t impacted other elements. She says the pool is full, and the slide should be fixed in time for opening day.
Polley says the staggered opening schedule also allows the city to keep one pool open later into the season, if weather allows. It also allows them to manage a drawdown in staffing levels that can come in mid-August when college-age lifeguards move back to campus.
She says they have enough lifeguards for now, but they are always looking to add to the roster. “We can always have more, and we are running another class here this week, which should give us a few more. We are doing pretty well, but we can always use some more. So if anyone is interested, they can check our website [for details].”
Polley provided the update following Monday’s Parks and Recreation Committee meeting. At the start of the meeting, the committee elected District 8 Alder Sarah Watson as Chairperson for the next two years. District 4 Alder Tom Neal was elected Vice Chair.
