WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — One day after the ceremonial start of a $17.5 million facelift, the Grand Theater has been awarded a $1.1 million grant from the state.
The money comes from the Department of Administration’s Non-State Grants for Local Projects, according to a news release.
“We are deeply grateful to the State for recognizing the long-term value of this project,” said Todd Nicklaus, Second Century Campaign Chairman. “This grant provides substantial momentum as we enter the final phase of our fundraising efforts. It ensures that the essential structural work—the foundation of our renovation—is fully supported as we begin construction.”
Work got underway this week, with a ceremonial groundbreaking on Wednesday. At that time, officials said they still needed to raise about $3 million to cover the improvements. Thursday’s news shrinks that gap to about $2 million.
Upgrades will include new seats, new carpet, and fresh paint in the seating area, along with lighting and A/V upgrades. The backstage dressing rooms and green rooms will also get a refresh.

The theater will be dark for the rest of the summer and fall, with the first show in the remodeled venue scheduled for November 7th. That will be the first of about a dozen shows in the last two months of the year.
