Wausau, WI (WSAU) — Wausau’s Department of Public Works was hosting a salt wise equipment open house. The event had local staff come and display the tools in order to explain the best ways to make the roads as safe as possible for people without using too much salt. Allison Madison, Wisconsin Salt Wise Manger, explains why the usage of salt could be harmful.
” Not everybody recognizes this, but when we put salt down and it does some melting on the roads, it kind of looks like it disappears, right? It doesn’t. Salt melts snow, and then it goes where the snow melt goes. So we’re seeing salt levels increase in our lakes and our streams, but also our drinking water, so a lot of municipal drinking water wells in the Wausau area are showing really high levels of sodium and chloride, which isn’t good for human health, right?”
There are multiple events happening this fall to show people how to properly use salt. More information can be found on wisaltwise.com.
