MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) – A Dane County Court judge on Tuesday heard a teachers group’s challenge to the state law that bans most public unions from collective bargaining.
Attorneys for the Abbottsford Education Association say Act 10 is unconstitutional because it still allows public safety unions to bargain.
“It’s pretty obvious that the Act 10 drafters were trying to favor certain groups that endorsed Governor Walker in the 2010 election, and not others.”
Attorneys for the Republican legislature say challenges to Act 10 have already been struck down, and that police unions require special protection to prevent dangerous strikes.
It’s likely the lawsuit will eventually come before the new liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Act 10 brought historic protests to the Wisconsin State Capital building when it was being introduced and debated in 2011.
