Administrator, school board member resign in Stevens Point during closed meeting

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Stevens Point schools will need to find a new superintendent and another school board member. There were plenty of shake ups during Tuesday’s closed session meeting. The board voted 4-3 not to renew the contract of Superintendent Attila Weninger when it expires in June of 2015, but Weninger told the Stevens Point Journal newspaper that he resigned before the vote was cast.

The Stevens Point School Board has been split on several issues over the years, and it has been more divided since enactment of Act 10. About a year ago, the Stevens Point Area Education Association teachers union gave Weninger a vote of no-confidence.

School board member Alex Kochanowski told the newspaper that he, Jeff Presley, Lisa Totten, and Kim Shirek voted for non-renewal, and President Angel Faxon, Jeff Ebel, and Patricia Baker voted to keep Weninger. He says if board members Christina Scott and Renae Sheibley had not walked out of the meeting before the vote, he’s certain it would have turned out differently. The result is the same, however, since Weninger claims to have resigned first.

Sheibley also decided to resign, effective at the end of the month. The board will likely seek applications and appoint someone to finish Scheibley’s term, which ends in April of 2015.
