Citations issued after man crashes into college building

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Citations have been issued to the driver involved in a crash Thursday night in Wausau. An elderly man drove his SUV through the front window of the UW Marathon Center for Civic Engagement

Wausau Police Chief Jeff Hardel says the driver hit the wrong pedal.  “The driver attempted to apply the brake, and inadvertently hit the accelerator, and then the vehicle got out of control, and he wasn’t able to gain control again.”

Hardel says the man was not injured, and there were no passengers. It’s also lucky nobody inside the center was hurt, as a jazz concert was underway just a couple of feet beyond where the vehicle stopped.

The Chief says the man was cited.  “We did issue two citations. One for inattentive driving and one for failure to wear a seat belt.”

The building and the GMC Yukon sustained heavy damage.  The driver's name has not been released.
