Police and Fire Commissions meet, as one's solution may create the other's problem

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau has narrowed the list of fire chief candidates to three, and Stevens Point is taking precautions. That’s because one of the three finalists for the Wausau position is the present Stevens Point Chief Tracey Kujawa.

The Stevens Point Police and Fire Commission is meeting Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in closed session to form a contingency plan for selecting an interim chief just in case they lose Kujawa to Wausau.

Wausau’s Human Resources Director Michael Loy says it may be wise for all three current employers to plan ahead, but Wausau has definitely not made any offers yet. He says the Wausau Police and Fire Commission is meeting Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. to discuss the format for final interviews.  “We’re in the planning stages of the final interviews that will occur in the second week in April, and at this point, all (three) candidates are being seriously considered.”

Stevens Point Fire Chief Tracey Kujawa, Battalion Chief Joseph Krueger from McHenry Township Illinois, and Gary Trulson from Western Technical College in La Crosse are the finalists.  “All three are very interested in moving forward to the final interview stage. There has been no decision on who Wausau’s next fire chief is going to be.”

Loy says the commission sees them all as top notch candidates at this time.

Police Chief Jeff Hardel is also the interim Fire Chief until the commission makes their selection next month.
