Mental competency being examined in Kou Thao murder case

WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - Attorneys were trying to decide Monday whether a 27-year-old man is mentally competent to stand trial for allegedly shooting and dismembering a man in Wausau.

Kou Thao has received three exams from doctors, all at the request of the defense.

Marathon County Circuit Judge Mike Moran says there probably won't be a fourth exam, because of legal limits on the amount of time a court can assess a person's mental competency.

Attorneys on both sides have not said why they couldn't decide whether Thao was able to help with his defense. They were meeting on the subject again Monday.

Thao is charged with homicide, hiding a corpse, and illegal firearm possession in the death last spring of 58-year-old Tong Pao Hang of St. Paul Minnesota.

Prosecutors said Thao shot Hang between the eyes, cut his head off, then drove the body parts to Milwaukee where they were found a week after the man was reported missing.
