UPDATE: One car crash claims Wausau man's life in Portage County

UPDATE:  The name of the man killed in the crash has been released.  He was 56-year-old Stephen A Wright of Wausau.

DANCY, Wis (WSAU) -- A one-car crash has claimed a life in northern Portage County. Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Michael Morgan says the crash happened Thursday morning at 11:26 a.m. on Highway 34 about 1/4 of a mile south of Highway E and barely south of the Marathon County line.

Morgan says the passenger car was southbound and drifted onto the shoulder. He says the driver made steering corrections, but lost control and slid sideways into the ditch. The vehicle began to roll over and then hit a stump, changing the direction of the rolling car.  “Had it probably not been for having some secondary contact down there, the car would have just continued to roll side-over-side, but the secondary impact with the stump really caused it to do some dynamic movement there.”

Morgan says the 56-year-old driver from central Wisconsin had severe head injuries.  “The driver was belted, but the dynamics of the crash gave him sudden and unrecoverable head injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The crash remains under investigation, and the victim’s name is being withheld until relatives are notified.

The Rudolph Fire Department and the Portage County Ambulance assisted deputies at the crash scene.
