Wausau rental licenses due by end of July

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau city inspectors are reminding landlords to get licensed before the end of July.

A first round of reminder letters have already gone out, and Chief inspector Bill Hiebert says they've already got a number of responses. "We sent out our first notice to apply to properties we feel are rentals. We'll be sending out a second notice here shortly, and applications will be due July 31st."

It's part of the new city ordinance that requires both registration and inspection of all rentals in the city. Hiebert says his department will be inspecting every single rental property over the next three years. "This year we broke it up into three different districts in the community. We're going to have two inspectors, one on the east side and one on the west side, go out and trying to meet with landlords, to go through their properties and try to address them."

But Hiebert says their secondary goal is getting a chance to meet with all the landlords in the city and get a chance to talk with them about being a landlord. Hiebert says the city is especially working with smaller scale landlords who might not know what's required of them. "The problem may be they inherited a property and haven't sold it yet so they're renting it out, or some other way the property fell into their lap. Perhaps they're not fully understanding what the duties of a landlord are." He's hoping he and his staff will be able to help handle a lot more issues this way before any complaints even have to come to the city.

Most of all, Hiebert wants people to know the city is not out to get them. "We're not just attacking landlords, we're trying to work with them, and gain a better living environment for everybody."
