MEDFORD, Wis. (WSAU) -- A theft ring that took construction equipment from several places in Wisconsin has been busted in Taylor County.

32-year-old Edward Peterson is charged with eight felony counts of receiving stolen property and several misdemeanor charges. 25-year-old Christopher Steig faces five receiving stolen property charges and two misdemeanor charges.

They are accused of stealing heavy equipment including a Caterpillar excavator that had a GPS system, which allowed authorities to track it’s location. The technology allowed officials to track the machine from a Boscobel job site to a barn in Taylor County. Other equipment included a two skid steers, an electric generator, and a jackhammer. Investigators say Peterson gave Steig a verbal shopping list, and told him he didn’t want to know where the equipment came from.

Steig will have an initial court appearance at 1:00 p.m., followed by Peterson at 2:00 p.m. July 1st in Taylor County court. Peterson is currently free on a $5,000 bond, with the first $2,000 of that in cash. Steig has been unable to post a $5,000 cash bond.
