Marathon County committee calls for study on how to help Brokaw

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A Marathon County committee says they want more information on the financial future of Brokaw.

The Education & Economic Development Committee agreed Monday night to ask the county for a survey and study of the village in the wake of the 2012 shutdown of the paper mill. County supervisor and committee chairman Jim Rosenberg says they just can't let the situation sit without taking steps. "Having things like this going on without resolution can put a risk premium on financing for other communities in the county. So it's a problem that needs solving, and we think this study is a good way to go about it."

That committee has been discussing doing a study for some time now and failed to pass a measure on the issue last month. Rosenberg says their job will be to find out what steps can be taken to help bring the village back to viability. "It's not the county's intent to fix all of that, but we think that we need to define the problem, and some of us feel that it's going to be something that will require some state intervention some time in the future."

A request for proposal has gone out for the study, and Rosenberg says he's hopeful. "I feel pretty good that we'll be able to select somebody to go forward with this and come up with some answers." Right now the village has a large debt to pay off for a sewer and water project, as well as a TIF district that limits construction.

The county board will take up the item at their first meetings in August.
