WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized over the weekend after being legally drunk. He's now been placed in protective custody, with police recommending neglect charges against his mother.
A neighbor on South First Avenue reported the intoxicated child to police. Officers took him to Wausau Aspirus Hospital. His blood-alcohol level was above .08. He was kept overnight for observation. The child has since been transferred to a juvenile shelter.
Police investigators say empty bottles were found in the boy's bedroom. His 44-year-old mother said she was unaware that her son had been drinking and did not know where the booze came from. She told police that she did allow the boy to consume alcohol on special occasions.
