Stranger stops to evacuate burning house

COLBY, Wis. (WSAU) -- An unidentified motorist is being credited with saving a Colby area family from fire Wednesday morning.

No one knows who the good samaritan was. The man was driving on Highway 13 south of Colby shortly after 10 o’clock and saw fire burning through the roof of the house. He stopped to make sure there was no one inside.

A 13-year-old girl was asleep on her grandmother’s bed, and woke up to the sound of the beating on the door. When he told her about the fire above them, she was able to find her sister and escape before the flames burned through from the attic.

The grandparents and another sister were not there at the time of the fire. Nobody was injured, but the house is a total loss.

The family wishes they could tell the good samaritan thank you.

Firefighters from Abbotsford, Colby, Owen-Withee, Spencer, and Dorchester battled the flames.
