Wausau residents concerned about new Kwik Trip development

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A proposed Kwik Trip on Wausau’s Bridge Street is drawing opposition from area residents.

The city of Wausau held a neighborhood meeting Wednesday evening along with Kwik Trip’s representative and lot developers Chuck and Chris Ghidorzi.

Most of the residents and rental property owners believe adding a convenience store at 1204 Bridge Street just west of Wausau Newman High School will create traffic problems, and noise and light pollution. Public Works and Utilities Director Brad Marquardt says Department of Transportation studies show the intersection of Stevens Drive, North 17th Avenue, and Bridge Street can handle more traffic.

Kwik Trip real estate director Hans Zietlow believes the opponents are outnumbered by the “silent majority” that would support the project.

Some attending the meeting would prefer development of an office building, because it would not be open 24 hours a day and would generate less vehicle traffic.

The project still has to go back to the Wausau City Council for approval.
