Waterfowl meeting at Mead Wildlife Center

MILLADORE, Wis. (WSAU) -- Hunters have an opportunity to discuss Mead Wildlife Area waterfowl rules at a meeting Wednesday. Hunters will have an opportunity to meet with Mead staff and Department of Natural Resources officials about the recently finished season, what worked well, and where improvements can be made in managing the Milladore area state wildlife area.

Mead Wildlife Area wildlife technician Patrice Eyers says they've been holding this meeting each year to get feedback from hunters. "Each year we hold a meeting after the waterfowl season for hunters, just to see how things were going, if they were seeing any results, seeing an improvement in the number of birds they were seeing and what not."

Eyers says they've been trying to ease back the pressure for the birds on opening weekend. "We see anywhere from 450 to 650 hunters that Saturday. That's a lot of people, so it gets pretty crowded, pretty congested. The birds don't like the pressure."

The area’s wildlife technician says this is an informational meeting for those who take part in waterfowl hunts in the park. "We are going to open discussion up with our hunters, if their happy, if they'd like to see anything different? It's something that we want them to guide us."

The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19. An alternative date of Feb. 26 will be used if limiting weather conditions are forecasted.

Further details and refuge maps are available at Mead Wildlife Area’s Visitor Center or at www.meadwildlife.org or by calling 715-457-6771.
