Assembly vote to eliminate State Treasurer Tuesday

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- There have been proposals to eliminate a couple of Wisconsin’s state elected offices.

Eliminating the Secretary of State and the State Treasurer positions has been debated before. There’s a vote in the State Assembly Tuesday on a constitutional amendment to eliminate the State Treasurer. Lawmakers have tried for the past six years to get rid of both positions. This time, they’re trying one office at a time.

Even if the Assembly passes the measure, it must pass the State Senate, and then both houses in another session of the Legislature before going to the voters in a referendum. The process guarantees Wisconsin will have a treasurer until at least January of 2019.

Current State Treasurer Kurt Schuller testified to an Assembly committee in 2011 that his office had been stripped of so many responsibilities, that good government principles required that it be eliminated altogether.
