Custodian contract reluctantly approved for Stevens Point schools

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) -- Stevens Point schools will continue contracting for custodial services, but that deal may not last. Last year, the district contracted with Clean Power to provide cleaning staff to work at various school buildings. The board received negative feedback from several people, including parents. Now with less than three weeks until classes start, a decision on who would clean classrooms had to be made.

Several board members were uncomfortable with renewing the contract, but with the short time left before school, board member Chris Scott felt they had little choice.  “I’m going to support this because I don’t think it’s fair to anyone. I don’t think it’s fair to the board, the administration, the kids, the schools, the people who work for Clean Power.”

Board Member Kim Shirek criticized the administration for not bringing the board more information since February.  “I’ve asked it. Can we look at one of the other ones if we don’t want Clean Power, if we can’t afford to hire our own custodians. Nothing’s ever came back where they looked at someone else. Never.”

Board President Angel Faxon believes the board had to renew Clean Power’s contract because they need these people ready to go when school starts, and changing providers now won’t work.  “Well, in my opinion it’s too late. We have students entering in 20 days. What we did tonight was out of necessity to more forward, and then we’ll figure out what to do starting in September committee meetings.”

The board approved the contract, but they also referred it to the Business Services Committee for further review. Several board members support issuing a new request for proposals and utilizing the 30-day cancellation option with the current provider.
