Groups can participate in WSP Energy Challenge

UNDATED (WSAU) -- Non-profit organizations can again compete in an energy conservation challenge to earn money. Wisconsin Public Service is having their 4th annual WPS Energy Challenge. WPS’ Kelly Zagrzebski says they will pick 15 community organizations to take part, and those groups will earn points by doing things that save energy at their members’ homes.  “Installing weatherization kits on ten residences within their community, take a look at their energy use and attempt to save about five percent on their energy bill as compared to last year at the same time frame, and then the other part is there’s different energy programs out there whether it’s through Focus on Energy or through their utility, and it’s an opportunity for them to learn about those.”

Zagrzebski says it is a good way for the group members to learn about saving energy and earn grants for their group at the same time. She says the participants earn points for the required tasks in the challenge.  “That’s all a part of the equation for us to help decide who are the grand winners and who are the twelve organizations that complete the challenge and will be awarded a thousand dollars. The top three organizations, the ones that save the most, install the most weatherization kits, and participate in the most energy awareness programs, will actually receive $1,500.”

Non-profits must apply before the August 22, 2014 deadline. Participating organizations from the WPS service area will undergo a qualifying selection process and be notified by September 3. Results will be analyzed in December 2014, with the awards granted soon afterwards.Online information about the WPS Energy Challenge and the application are available at the Wisconsin Public Service website.
