WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- A new three-on-three basketball tournament will start in Wausau this summer. The Wausau-Central Wisconsin Visitors and Convention Bureau, which operates the Badger State Games, is beginning their own tournament as part of the Badger State Games. It replaces the Gus Macker tournament, which Wausau Newman High School sponsored until last year.

Russ Bahr is with the bureau and the Badger State Games. He says the first thing players will notice is striped shirts.  “It will be a little bit nicer. We’re going to have, each court is going to have officials that will make calls, where Gus Macker doesn’t have officials that actually make the calls, the players make the calls, so it will keep the game a little more in control and make it a little more actual basketball.”

Newman High School had indicated that Macker participation was down in recent years. Bahr expects this inaugural event will start small and grow.  “It’s our first year of doing it. We’re not expecting as many teams as Macker had, but our hope is to continue to do it year by year and grow it along with the games, again bringing more and more people into the community of Wausau.”

Bahr says the new tournament as part of the Badger State Games will cost participants less money to participate.  “I know that we don’t have to pay for the name Gus Macker since we are Badger State Games, so that will save initially in registration fees and not near as much for the players, either, so we have a little bit more to look forward to with saving costs on a player’s perspective but gaining because of having your officials running the games.”

Prizes will be a little bit different under the Badger State Games.  “Gus Macker would traditionally give out their basketball trophies. Along with Badger State Games, everyone who registers gets a t-shirt, and then your top three teams each get Badger State Games medals.”

Apparently, the Toilet Bowl trophy isn’t coming back.

The new three-on-three tournament will be in conjunction with other Badger State Games events in the Wausau area.  “It will be June 15th, so it’s going to be a one day Sunday event. The goal is to get it big enough to run again Saturday and Sunday just like the Macker did.”

Registration for basketball and all Badger State Games events is available online
