WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- Wausau has selected their new fire chief. She is presently Stevens Point's Fire Chief Tracey Kujawa.
Kujawa was one of three finalists for the position that became open when Wausau Chief Gary Buchburger retired earlier this year.
Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple says the city is excited to bring new leadership on board, and says Kujawa has some past interaction with Wausau firefighters already. “She’s not a stranger to our community. She has done several educational components to our fire department, EMS, and other training sessions, so it’s not like she was not known to our community and we’re thrilled to have her on board.”
Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson says Wausau’s gain is definitely Stevens Point’s loss, but they have been planning for the possibility of losing their chief. “Certainly, our Police and Fire Commission has been very cognisant of the opportunity that Chief Kujawa was presented as she applied, and certainly they had started to think proactively and strategically about the process, so they already have a meeting scheduled for April 22nd which will deal with the hiring process, the naming of an interim fire chief, and certainly how our city will deal with the transition for a fire chief.”
Kujawa’s tentative start date as Wausau’s fire chief is May 12th.
