WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Wausau Fire Department is hiring more than just a new chief. They’ve also been reviewing applicants for firefighters.
Police Chief and Interim Fire Chief Jeff Hardel says conditional offers of employment have been issued. “We have five current openings at the fire department. We interviewed eight individuals. We offered conditional offers of employment to five of those, and of course, they have to do some additional tests to satisfy that requirement, and then they will be on board if they pass.”
Hardel says the additional tests include a psychiatric evaluation and pre-employment drug screening. He says for now, it’s too early to release the names of the successful applicants. “As soon as we get results back, and we know that the requirement is satisfied, then we can release the names.”
The Interim Chief was impressed with the number of quality applicants they received. “I thought we had a real solid group of candidates. It was fairly deep, and I’m very pleased with the quality, so I’m really looking forward to these guys coming on board.”
Hardel says the search for the new Fire Chief is also making progress, as the three finalists go through extensive final interviews with city officials and the Human Resources Department. Stevens Point Fire Chief Tracey Kujawa, Battalion Chief Joseph Krueger from McHenry Township, Illinois, and Gary Trulson from Western Technical College in La Crosse are the finalists.
